Despite evidence supplied by the Trinidad and Tobago police to the United States, terrorist Luis Posada Carriles is on trial in that country solely for lying and falsifying documents, according to Newsday.
Posada is charged with lying, immigration fraud, and obstructing the law, even though he is wanted for terrorist attacks against Cuba, the Guyanan consulate in Port of Spain, and the BWIA offices in Barbados in 1976, says the article, "CIA Terrorist on Trial."
The article by Andre Bagoo reports on Posada's long list of terrorist actions, including the explosion of a Cuban airliner in 1976, for which he is not being tried at present.
For years, Cuba and Venezuela have demanded justice for those crimes. Posada escaped from a jail in Venezuela, where he was sentenced to nine years in prison for conspiring with the individuals who planted the bomb on the Cuban plane.
Posada's hired assassins, Hernan Ricardo Lozano and Freddy Lugo, were arrested a few hours after the attack on the Cuban plane, and confessed their responsibility for the crime to the assistant commissioner of the Port of Spain police, the article says.
The report Ricardo wrote was declassified by the U.S. National Security Archive in 2007. It contains information on the firms, embassies, and offices that maintained relations with Cuba, as well as details of targets in Barbados, Colombia, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago. The U.S. National Security Archive also declassified a report containing the interrogation of Ricardo and Lugo at the police station in Port of Spain, the news article says, with detailed information on their statements.
Ricardo confessed that a Panamanian who holds Venezuelan citizenship and another member of an organization linked to Posada planted a bomb at the Guyana consulate in Port of Spain.
The journalist concludes the article summarizing Posada's long criminal record of terrorist acts contained in documents declassified by the United States, which involve him in the Iran-Contra case and, according to some theories, in the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the Bay of Pigs invasion.
