New York Nightlife Icon One Of Two Found Dead In D.C. Apartment

WASHINGTON - D.C. police are investigating the death of a man known as an icon in New York's gay nightlife scene.
Dean Johnson, 46, was found dead inside an apartment in the Envoy building on 16th Street last month. News4 has learned Johnson was one of two people to die in the same apartment about a week apart last month.
Police said that Johnson had gone to the building to visit another man.
The violent crimes branch is investigating both deaths. Sources said they are considering the possibility that both were drug overdoses, but in at least one case, the medical examiner has not determined the cause and manner of death, News4's Pat Collins reported.
Sources said police are trying to determine who rents the apartment and who was with the men when they died, as well as how they died, Collins reported.
Johnson was a singer and songwriter who would perform in high heels, a tube skirt and drop earrings. He formed several bands, including The Velvet Mafia. He was bald and stood 6 feet 6 inches tall.

Yesterday we delivered the distressing news that New York downtown scenester Dean Johnson has died.
While we’ve got no fresh details on the Velvet Mafia front man’s DC death, there are a few rumors floating around, including talk of murder.
Lower East Side photographer John Penley told Page Six that e-mails from Johnson’s computer reveal he’d been going to D.C. regularly “to set up weird sex parties for a WEALTHY SAUDI GUY. Nobody knows his identity, but it’s all very suspicious.”
Dean, who had a history of drug use, had no ID on him when his body was discovered, and stayed in the morgue for several days before he was identified. His death in under investigation. Johnson, 45, promoted the weekly “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fag Party” at the old CBGB. “There probably isn’t a single gay in the entire city who hasn’t been to one of Dean’s parties,” Penley said.

Dean Johnson was a six-foot-six bald-headed HIV-positive meth-using porn star and glam-rock frontman known for his New York events such as C.B.G.B.’s “Rock ‘n Roll Fag Party.” He was found dead in D.C. last week, and his unidentified corpse sat in a local morgue for days before being identified. Oh, and according to the New York Post, Johnson was routinely visiting Washington to run “weird sex parties” for an unidentified Saudi millionaire.
