Sound Familiar? You betcha!
Warning: If you are a fan of Beck, Hannity, AM talk radio, Jonah Goldberg, or many other "conservative" pundits, this video may cause you to experience some cognitive dissonance. The video shows Nazi party members tearing down the posters of the German communist and socialist parties, which folks like Beck have been telling you were actually part of the same movement. I'll post an explanation for this following the video in hopes of nipping in the bud some of the inevitable confusion that will certainly ensue in the comments.
OK, now about the talking point that Nazism and fascism were actually left-wing socialist movements...
The Nazis were also called the National Socialist Party but they were fascists and had next to nothing to do with socialism. That's a name. China is referred to as the People's Republic of China, and East Germany under communism was called the German Democratic Republic. Likewise, North Korea is officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. These nations are neither democratic nor republics.
In Nazi Germany, the socialist and communist parties were the groups that opposed and fought the Nazi party the most.
It's important to note that before the Nazis went after the Jews, they rounded up the communists, socialists, trade unionists, gays, civil libertarians, academics and (by name) liberals.
I hope people think about this video next time Steve King comes to town blaming all of our problems on immigrants, liberals, unions and gays.
